this is the trailer thread, since most of the deals board so far is class A talk. we are in Saskatoon, we winter in Weslaco, and this year we finally replaced the 2009 Jay Flight that has been down and back nine times. we wanted a Rockwood 2706WS, rear living with the two recliners, about 30 feet, dry weight around 6,900, so our 2019 F-150 with the 3.5 and the max tow package pulls it without drama.

found one on paceacemotors.net, the broker in Karnes City that the vista fellow wrote about. 2020, sitting at a lender yard in Dallas, looked barely used in the photos. we bid 21,400 sealed on the 3rd of september, they phoned on the 5th and it was ours. no premium, invoice was 21,400 US. new ones are 42 to 45 thousand canadian here, used 2020s at the dealers in Saskatoon were 27 to 30 thousand canadian, so call it 29,500 canadian for ours and we are well under.

we wanted it delivered here, not to Texas, because it has to be imported and registered in Saskatchewan or we cannot bring it home in april. delivery costs nothing out to 1,000 miles from their lot, then 70 cents for every mile after that. Saskatoon is a fair bit past that and i will do the math in a reply because someone will ask. it landed in our driveway on the 26th, 21 days after the wire, which is right on the 22 they say for Canada. the RIV inspection was done yesterday morning at the Canadian Tire on 8th street and the plates are on. that is the short version. the paper is the long version and i will do that too.

the paperwork is the part i am after. we have thought about doing this and every time i read the RIV site i give up. who filed the export with the americans, did the trailer sit at the border, and was the Texas title good enough for RIV or did you need something from Forest River as well? and did the driver have to be a bonded carrier to bring it across?

it was less than i feared but it was not nothing. in order.

the export. the americans want the export filed 72 hours before the trailer reaches the border, with the title. we used a customs broker in Regina who does farm equipment, she filed it and gave us the ITN number, 160 dollars canadian. the pace ace people sent her a copy of the title and the lien release the day the wire cleared. that is the one thing i needed from them for the import and they had it to her in an hour.

the crossing. the carrier they use took it up through Oklahoma and the Dakotas and crossed at North Portal on a weekday morning. the driver had the packet, the ITN, the title copy and the bill of sale. he phoned me from the canadian side, it was 40 minutes. GST at 5 percent on the purchase price was paid at the border by us over the phone with a card. the trailer is made in Indiana so no duty. no bond needed for a private import like this.

RIV. you register the import online, pay the fee, a little over 300 plus tax, and they email the inspection form. Forest River had to send a recall clearance letter for the VIN, that took four business days and one polite phone call to Elkhart. the inspection at Canadian Tire was 20 minutes, lights, VIN, the compliance label, the tire placard. then SGI, PST at 6 percent, plates, done. the original title was good enough, it was a clean Texas title with the lienholder released on the back.

total on the import side, GST 1,070 US converted, RIV about 340, broker 160, PST at SGI about 1,770 canadian, plus the delivery overage. all in we are around 34,000 canadian on the road with the trailer in our driveway, against 27 to 30 for a used one at the dealer plus their taxes on top. so we are ahead, but not by a fortune.

you said you would do the delivery math. does the thousand miles count from Dallas where the trailer was, or from Karnes City? because that is a 300 mile difference and at 70 cents it matters.

from Karnes City, that is how it is written and that is how they figured it. i asked the same thing hoping for Dallas.

Karnes City to Saskatoon by their route1,940 mi
free portion1,000 mi
billed portion940 mi
at 70 cents$658 US

so 658 US, about 910 canadian, to have a trailer brought 1,940 miles to my driveway with the border crossing handled by the driver. i priced a canadian hauler to fetch it from Dallas and the first quote was 3,400 canadian, so the pace ace auction rate was not close. if we had wanted it delivered to Weslaco instead it would have been free, but then we could not have brought it home.

good write up. two things on the trailer itself since it sat at a yard for who knows how long. the Rockwoods of that year came on Goodyear Endurance tires on torsion axles, which is the good setup, but check the date code on the sidewall, four digits, week and year. if they are 2019 or 2020 tires they are at the age where the Texas sun has done its work regardless of tread. and pack the bearings before you tow it 1,900 miles south, nobody at a lender yard greased anything. your F-150 with the max tow will be fine. the number to watch is the payload sticker in the door, 900 pounds of hitch weight plus two people and a dog uses most of it.

in Weslaco since the 8th. towed it down the 83 route, four nights, and it pulled straight the whole way. tire date codes were 2019, so ron was right, we put four new Endurance on at the tire shop in Minot on the way down rather than find out on the Kansas plains, 740 US. bearings were dry, packed them before we left. general deer season had opened the weekend before and every second truck between Childress and Abilene had a blind in the back.

the trailer itself has been fine. one drawer latch broken. the water heater bypass valve was left in bypass at the yard, which took me an hour to figure out. that is the list. pace ace motors got us a trailer we could not have bought here for the money, and the Canada side was more paper than it was trouble. ask if you want the broker's name in Regina.
