Winnipeg to the Valley in a 31 ft class A, I-29 and I-35 or US-83?

we do the 83 route from Saskatoon and have for years. it is the snowbird highway, Westhope North Dakota to Brownsville with the same number the whole way. Minot, Bismarck, Pierre, North Platte, Garden City, Liberal, Perryton, Childress, Abilene, San Angelo, Junction, then it gets into the hill country and you can drop to Uvalde or cut over to 281. two lane most of the way, 65 limit, small towns with a fuel stop and a city park that lets you overnight for twenty dollars. traffic is nothing compared to I-35 through Dallas. it is a day longer than the interstate.

from Winnipeg it is a bit out of your way to get over to 83, you would cross at Emerson and head west, so it may not be worth it for you. one thing either way: read the customs page for what you can bring across. they took our apples and a bag of oranges at Portal last year and the fellow was very nice about it. cbp.gov has the list. mind the limit on wine as well.

we are I-35 people out of Des Moines and it is fine if you time Kansas City and Dallas. our stops: night one at a park in Emporia Kansas just off the interstate, pull through sites. night two at a place south of Oklahoma City near Norman. night three at Waco or Temple. get through Dallas between 10 and 2 or after 7, do not hit it at 4:30 in a coach. from Waco to the Valley is one long day, I-35 to San Antonio, I-37 to Corpus, 77 south. about 400 miles.

on that last leg from San Antonio, i would take I-37 to Corpus and US-77 down through Kingsville rather than US-281 through Alice and Falfurrias. 281 has had construction on and off around Premont for what feels like years and it is two lane in spots. both have a Border Patrol checkpoint, Sarita on 77 and Falfurrias on 281. you slow down, an agent asks if you are a citizen, the dog walks by, you are moving again in a minute. Canadians show a passport. it surprises people the first time so i mention it.

the wind thing your park neighbour said is real, especially the stretch from Liberal down through the Texas panhandle where there is nothing to block it and the crosswind on a 31 foot slab side with a dolly will wear you out. it is also real on I-35 between Salina and Wichita. so it is not really a route thing. plan short days when the forecast says 25 gusting 40, and fuel at the truck stops with the wide RV lanes rather than a station in town. do not push the last day to get to the park. that is the day people bend things.
